Mexican Painter Living and Working in  Italy.

Alejandra Mijares grew up in a vibrant ecosystem that marries urban chaos with immense beauty. Her natural appreciation for visual aesthetics drew her toward nature and, inevitably, into the world of art.

When contemplating her work over the last decade, one can see the influence of several life-changing events: the death of a beloved brother, relocations between countries, motherhood, the faithful company of her dog, and, most recently, the effort of finding stability after years of constant upheaval.

She draws her method from the subconscious, where fragments of reality play in a world with rewritten rules. Her work could aptly be categorized as biomorphic surrealism, where curved and fluid lines blend geographical and biological elements to create worlds that seem impossible—yet strangely familiar.

The main aspiration that drives Alejandra’s work is the desire to convey a sense of awe sparked by contemplating the universe and the nature of existence itself. Her art seeks to express this by reaching as far as improbable worlds beyond our galaxy, and as deep within as her own womb—revealing that an inner landscape can be just as vast and mysterious as the universe itself.

Bio

Born in Mexico City in 1988, Alejandra Mijares studied a Bachelor's degree in Branding and Design, as well as a course in Illustration at CENTRO de Diseño Cine y Televisión University in Mexico City. In 2013, she began studying under the tutelage of Ana G. Kobeh — a renowned visual arts professor, author, and curator — a cherished relationship she maintains to this day.

In 2017, she held her debut exhibition in México city, where she showcased a wide range of her artistic creations. Shortly thereafter, she moved to New York, where she began drawing inspiration from the natural surroundings of the northern United States, her research on astrobiology, and organic structures. It was during this period that her distinctive use of color sharpened, laying the foundation for her later work in landscapes.

During this time, her landscapes began to take on surreal qualities, and her artistic language continued to evolve. She also began exploring new themes inspired by biological processes, giving rise to the “Chrysalis” series. Her personal metamorphosis through motherhood deeply informed her “Womb” series, reflecting this intimate transformation.

Since moving to Switzerland in 2021, her practice has gained increasing international recognition. Her paintings have been exhibited in London, and she was selected for the 2022 Chianciano Biennale. That same year, she participated in the Focus Art Fair in Paris and received a Certificate of Artistic Achievement from the Luxembourg Art Prize. Her work has also continued to be exhibited in Mexico City, notably in the group show Celebrating 10 Years of Comité de Proyectos.

In 2023, she relocated to Monza, in Italy, where her work continues to evolve alongside her family life. Since 2025, her work has been represented by MEREA, an art gallery renowned in partnership with Dior x UNESCO. She is currently among the selected artists for the 2025 Florence Biennale XV.
